A gathering of the best of contemporary graphic art

New York has long been the hub of contemporary graphics and comics publishing, and Brooklyn the borough of choice for many of the city’s best cartoonists and graphic artists. Bringing together an international cast of cartoonists, illustrators, designers, and printmakers, The Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival , founded by local bookstore Desert Island and local publisher PictureBox, is the first festival to serve this vibrant community.

The Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival will consist of 4 components:

- Over 50 exhibitors selling their zines, comics, books, prints and posters in a bustling market-style environment
- Signings, panel discussions and lectures by prominent artists
- Exhibition of vintage comic book artwork
- An evening of musical performances

In the cozy basement of Our Lady of Consolation Church, exhibitors will display and sell their unique wares. Exhibitors include leading graphic book publisher Drawn & Quarterly of Montreal; famed French screenprint publisher Le Dernier Cri; artist’s book publisher Nieves of Zurich, Switzerland; Italian art book publisher Corraini; master printer David Sandlin; and tons of individual artists and publishers from Brooklyn.

Featured guests include the renowned artists Gabrielle Bell, R. O. Blechman, Charles Burns, C.F., Kim Deitch, Ben Katchor, Michael Kupperman, Mark Newgarden, Gary Panter, Ron Rege Jr., Peter Saul, Dash Shaw, R. Sikoryak, Jillian Tamaki, and Lauren Weinstein, among others.

The commerce portion of the Festival is partnered with an active panel and lecture program nearby at Secret Project Robot gallery, down the street at 210 Kent Ave. This mini-symposium will run from 1 to 6 pm and is being overseen by noted comics critic Bill Kartalopolous. Also at Secret Project Robot will be an intimate exhibition of original comic book pages from 1950s romance, western and science fiction comic books, curated by PictureBox’s Dan Nadel.

Finally, at the end of the day visitors can troop over to Death by Audio at 49 S. 2nd Street, for an evening of musical performances by cartoonists, organized by Paper Route, and including performances by Boogie Boarder, Ambergris, Scary Mansion, Nick Gazin, and many others.

It's more songs about books than you've ever heard in one sitting, unless you were here in August when we played songs about The Bible, because that night was aptly biblical.  It's been a year of Bushwick Book Club, and to celebrate our year of ground-breaking, literary songwriting dare-devilry, we're having a night of highlights from the whole year.  Come hear Corn Mo sing about "The Unbearable Lightness of Being," Liv Carrow's take on "Breakfast of Champions" and Phoebe Kreutz's perspective on "James and the Giant Peach."

All proceeds from the night will go toward production costs of The Bushwick Book Club compilation CD to be released in January 2010.

Dave Novak writes songs for his band Habit Trail, a project of folky dirt which has followed him from Indonesia to Portland, Oregon to New York, and which is close to its 20-year anniversary. The most recent release Drifting On Off Of The Shoulder is available on Deterioration Tapes; the next album will be released on 12" vinyl in Winter 2009.
Dibson T. Hoffweiler - The latest in a long line of quirky anti-folk ingenues, including Beck, Adam Green and Jeffrey Lewis, Dibs applies that time-honored tradition of off-beat songwriting to his own private world of sugar factories, laundry baskets and ducks.
Jonathan Wood Vincent is the most expensive green tea at the tea cup, but you can buy him at the same price as all the other teas if you order him to go. His music resists depicting some formative moments. These involve psychiatric wards, duels, knots, cock fighters, sewing, brow beating, bead sweating, wet needles, truth, groceries, and ritual smooth skin. Maria Sonevytsky was handstand champion of the first grade. Her prowess for physically demanding feats of grace made her a natural accordion player. She's squeezed with the Main Squeeze Orchestra, Anti Social Music and various NYC groups. Her current band is The Debutante Hour, an accordion, cello and drum power trio she formed w/ Susan Hwang in 2007.
Susan Hwang plays accordion and write songs about zombies, books, books about zombies, parking, her mother and the Devil himself. She plays in accordion/drum/cello power trio, The Debutante Hour.
Sweet Soubrette features the vocals and ukulele playing of NYC's Ellia Bisker, whose songwriting has been described as "Liz Phair meets Leonard Cohen." She performs frequently in NYC and Brooklyn with her band, and is working on her second album, "Days and Nights," scheduled for release in 2010.
Victor Varnado Victor Varnado is a filmmaker and comedian who has appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and My name is Earl. His upcoming Comedy Special The Awkward Kings will begin airing on Comedy Central in February. Currently he he has two cats, Ding Sing and Patty.

Liv Carrow: Idiosyncratic guitar playing, navel gazing, highly biographical, cathartic lyricism, obnoxious punning, moot metaphor, unabashed self-consciousness, and run-on sentences of self-promotion are qualities nary as compelling as in the case of NYC's Liv Carrow.

Laura Brenneman: Smart, funny and engaging; she sounds like the love-child of Stephen Sondheim and Joni Mitchell, raised by Muppets.

Joe Crow Ryan: Also known as "The Greatest Living Subway Musician in New york City," he sounds like Mr. Rogers doing a Louis Prima impersonation, but it depends on the song...."
Rachel Devlin:  Rachel is a singer-songwriter in Brooklyn who collaborates with many local musicians including Dan Costello.  She most recently graced the stage of the 2009 OJ All Day Festival.
Buffie Roseanne:  Local singer-songwriter with a powerful, soul-inspired style.  If you have a soul, her voice will draw it out.

Corn Mo: Corn Mo is an accordion-playing rock giant.  He performs solo and also with his awesome band, .357 Lover.  He's toured with Polyphonic Spree and David Bowie.  He's toured a lot with They Might Be Giants, Ben Folds and David Cross.

Accordions!  Magic!  Juggling!  Opera!  Puppetry!  Rock!  Bluegrass!  Comedy!  Comedic, magic rock puppetry, juggling operatic accordions on bluegrass!

The Debutante Hour, America's favorite accordion/drum/cello power trio, presents a Variety Show Telethon Bash with 20 old Soviet rotary phones and a silent auction to raise funds for their new record.  Piano virtuoso and composer, Jonathan Wood Vincent (myspace.com/thintapwoodsapone ) is the anti-Welk MC for this night of obscenely varied variety held at the Ukrainian National Home in the East Village.  This night brings together the harmonizing, witty folk-rock of The Wowz, the emmy-winning songwriting of Phoebe Kreutz and new cult phenomenon, Old Hat.  All this and magic too.

The Debutante Hour keeps its musical roots in American country, blues and vaudeville while letting their lyrics run the gamut from absurd to sublime. Susan Hwang and Maria Sonevytsky switch fluidly between accordion/keys and hobo drum kit while Mia Pixley holds it down on the cello as the unconventional power trio harmonizes about planning, worldviews and works of literature, with the occasional swerve into a Carpathian mountain stomp.

The group formed as a duo in 2007 when Maria Sonevytsky and Susan Hwang joined songwriting forces and fashion sensibilities. In addition to playing their favorite NYC venues, they toured Far East Asia (South Korea, Japan) and Europe (Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Italy, UK). Mia Pixley joined them in 2008 and has added to a fuller sound and irrepressible energy. Together, they’ve received rave reviews for their engaging and enthralling live performances. They will charm the hell out of you. I’m serious. They’ll sing and play until you’re completely hell-free.

Dear Friends,

I'm very excited to let you know that I will be performing in a one-woman show at La MaMa for two weekends in November, the 13th to the 22nd. It's a play I helped the writer-director develop that primarily explores the relationship between an older woman and a younger one (along with a few other characters, all of which I play), and how the burdens of love and history/war/immigration affect them.
