Periodically Speaking: Literary-Magazine Editors Introduce Emerging Writers at The New York Public Library New York, NY—The Council of Literary Magazines and Presses [clmp] and The New York Public Library present Periodically Speaking, a reading series providing a major venue for emerging writers to present their work while emphasizing the diversity of America's literary magazines and the magazine collections of The New York Public Library. Each event presents writers from three influential literary magazines—one poet, one fiction writer, one nonfiction writer—introduced by their editors. Program I Tuesday, October 13th, 6 - 7:30 pm DeWitt Wallace Periodical Room, The New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd (Please use Fifth Avenue entrance; admittance is free) Vestal Review Vestal Review, America's first magazine exclusively devoted to flash fiction (complete stories of no more than 500 words), began as a quarterly eZine in March of 2000. We now publish twice a year in print; some of the stories from these editions may be read on our webzine as well. We pay our contributors and nominate for web-based and print awards, including the Pushcart prize. For more information about submitting, obtaining past print issues or subscribing, please look us up at: http://vestalreview.net. Editors Mark Budman and Susan O'Neill introduce fiction writer Lincoln Michel. Low Rent In 2008 Low Rent was founded with belief that those heavy, incredibly large journals of fiction and poetry were really great, but smaller, sillier-sized journals would be better (and cheaper). Based in Brooklyn, editors Bill Hughes, Jason Koo, and Robert Liddell tirelessly attempt to curate collections of two stories and six poems by new and emerging writers from all over the world. When you can find them, a copy of Low Rent can be had for a very small price, a few dollars—as though the recession might've always been in style. Editor Jason Koo introduces poet Leigh Stein. Tin House Tin House is a ten-year-old bi-coastal (Brooklyn, New York and Portland, Oregon) literary magazine. Tin House has been honored in Best American Short Stories, Best American Essays, Best American Poetry, O'Henry Prize Stories, the Pushcart Prize Anthology and numerous other anthologies. Editor Rob Spillman introduces nonfiction writer Montana Wojczuk. Mark the next Periodically Speaking programs on your calendar: Tuesday, November 10th, and Tuesday, December 8th. We're featuring editors from the publications Salamander, 32 Poems, Confrontation and more. This series is made possible in part by support from the New York State Council for the Arts, a state agency; The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; The National Endowment for the Arts; The New York Public Library; and Friends of [ clmp ], a diverse group of individuals committed to supporting independent literary publishing. |
